The Overhaul – Day 20

My God, it’s been that long. So sorry, folks, for all the missed days. I’ve been having a pretty busy time these past few weeks. The week right after my previous post was one filled with projects and school requirements. The next weeks after that were just crazy. School has been going on and off because of the apparent threat of A(H1N1) in our school. That apparancy became a reality last Monday when everything was sorted out. Our school has a case of swine flu. It’s probably nothing to worry about. Now, we have 2 weeks of no school on our hands. It’s looking up to be a pretty bad last year of high school for our batch. [sigh]

Now on to my Overhaul news. As you’ve probably seen, it’s way neater than it was 3 weeks back. I actually fixed up the errors last week, but I didn’t get to post on it because I was still kind of busy with all the stuff I need to catch on for school. It’s almost the end of July and the Haven’s 1st birthday inches closer. I’ve started on fixing up the categories of each post. If you look farther into the site, you’ll see some pretty neat categorizing. I haven’t decided on a replacement for OGC! yet but I’ll handle it probably on Monday. I’ve got one more week to do everything I planned to do last month. It looks to be a tight schedule even if I’m on a break.

On the gaming side of things, there’s only one real thing to talk about. Although I’d just like to mention that the Wii has been with us for two weeks already. I just got around playing all the stuff I’ve missed which got to include No More Heroes, The Conduit (yes, The Conduit) and Punch Out!!! (although I’ll probably leave that at my brother’s hands). I’ll get into detail with The Conduit and Punch Out!!! next post, because I believe they deserve their own time. Right now, the thing I wanted to get out is Super Metroid for the SNES. As you may know, I’ve been playing that on an emulator and I’ve gotten pretty far. Super Metroid is a pretty good game and there isn’t a time I didn’t enjoy it. I’m in the final stretch of the game with only a couple of bosses left before I meet Mother Brain. I’ve been waiting for that boss with so much anticipation. Seeing that 3D cinematic from Metroid: Other M’s trailer made we want to relish how it feels like seeing it in 2D. Kinda backwards-thinking if you look at it, but who cares!

Anyway, besides real games, there’s a lot to talk about when it comes to the term “Machinima” and “ScrewAttack”. Those two are basically two important “Other Media” related to video games. Machinima is basically two words stringed together: Machine and Cinema. It’s an industry term for user-made cinematic movies which were developed using video game engines. ScrewAttack is probably a less familiar term. It derives itself from the Metroid games where there is a traditional upgrade called the “Screw Attack”, although Metroid has nothing to do with it. It’s a site which places a lot of emphasis on video game reviews and top-10 countdowns and such. These two things come together to bring a form of entertainment which people like me enjoy: comedy shows based on video games. From Machinima’s side, we have two shows which come from a pretty big franchise, one called Half-Life. I owe Ross Scott a big deal because he has made a number of pretty funny videos. You’ve seen him with his Civil Protection series which I’ve posted so long ago. They recently uploaded a new episode of CP and it’s still pretty good. Another good series worth mentioning that comes from him is Freeman’s Mind. I might’ve mentioned it in some post before but basically, it’s the Half-Life game commented by a neurotic, paranoid and typical Gordon Freeman. It’s all good if you ask me. ScrewAttack is included here because it’s the only thing I can tie it to. From my traverses in YouTube and GameTrailers, I’ve found this other comedy series called Angry Video Game Nerd. ScrewAttack associates themselves with a guy named James Rolfe to come up with a pretty funny series about James Rolfe’s gaming life. James Rolfe generally reviews games from the 80s and 90s to show how most of them sucked. Besides the comedy, what I really like about this series is the gamer insight from back in time. I wasn’t born during that time so I couldn’t have any experience on what it felt like to be a gamer then. With the help of AVGN, I could imagine all the problems of not being able to know if a game’s good or not.

So we move on to the anime segment. There’s only one thing to say here: Shakugan no Shana. That about sums up my anime viewing these past few weeks. I’m done with season 1 and I just began on season 2. It’s all just a hype show for season 3 coming this October. I’ve tried my luck with another show called Bakemonogatari but it hasn’t really clicked yet. I’ll probably go back to it once the episodes have picked up. So far, there has only been two episodes on the list. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood doesn’t even need to be mentioned. I’ve already submitted myself to a weekly 30-minute break with this series. Lately, they’ve had a switch in opening and ending themes so I’ve got two extra J-Pop stuff I have to get the feel of.

As a footnote, I’ll be pretty busy this weekend since another college submission is coming up and I’ve got to review for SAT and the UPCAT. Don’t expect me to be available much on the next following days. After this, it’s gonna be another big overhaul for this site. I’ll be updating a lot next time. Ciao!~
